Volcano Korero

Today we had two volcano experts visit us from Auckland Museum. Tom and Ari came to our school to talk about 'Volcanoes'

We had a fantastic time learning facts about volcanoes. We know there are 53 volcanoes in Auckland. You can see them in red on the map below.

We looked at the layers of the earth.  We know there are 3 layers...

  1. crust
  2. mantle
  3. core

We put labels on the different parts of the volcano.

We labelled these parts:
ash, lava flow, magma chamber, crust and volcanic bombs.

We watched a volcano erupting. Ari explained what happens when a volcano erupts.

Fascinating Volcano Facts:

We know that...

  • there are 53 volcanoes in Auckland
  • there are are 52 extinct volcanoes in Auckland
  • there is one sleeping volcano in Auckland called Rangitoto

Rangitoto is Auckland's biggest and youngest volcano. It is 600 years old.

We got to look at and touch some amazing rocks.
  • pumice (from Lake Taupo)
  • obsidian (from the Coromandel)
  • lava bombs (from around Aotearoa)
  • ash (gathered from Tarawera)

This is a great video to learn about volcanoes in Auckland. There are over 50 volcanic cones and craters in Auckland New Zealand. Dr Ian Smith explains how they erupt, and the rocks that they produce.

Here is a fantastic video to tell us all about volcanoes.

Here are a few stories about volcanoes for you to enjoy.
