Science in a Van

We had a fantastic session in the hall about science.  We heard a story all about 'Force and Motion'. Our experts talked about pushing, pulling and friction.  Here are a few videos to help us learn about force and motion.

Here are a few pictures from our session. The story they used to help explain forces was...

The Billy Goats Gruff.

Geometry

This week in maths we are learning about shapes (geometry). Here are a few videos to help you learn the shapes.

We looked at how we could sort shapes by colour, shape and size.

We made lots of different shapes out of foam popsicle sticks.

We built cities from shapes.

We even painted patterns into circle shapes.

Great sorting by colour, shape and size.

Matariki

Matariki

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about Matariki.

Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as Pleiades. It is also the name for the Māori New Year celebration.

This is a great song to learn the names of the stars.

We have listened to lots of stories about Matariki. Here are some read alouds to watch again.

This is our big book that we have been reading.

Matariki Breakfast / Ready to Read Colour Wheel / Instructional Series / English - ESOL - Literacy Online website - Instructional Series

We know lots of facts about Matariki:

  • It is a time for learning about the land and how to look after it
  • It is a time for sharing family stories
  • It is a time to fish and gather kaimoana
  • It is a time for making things, to learn how to weave and carve
  • It is a time for making and flying kites
  • It is time for planing trees and winter crops

We have had a poem about Matariki.

We made kites and flew them out on the field. It was so much fun running along with our kites flying behind us.
